Buccoo Reef/ Bon Accord Wetlands Designated RAMSAR sites
The Government of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago has designated the Buccoo Reef/ Bon Accord Lagoon Complex a Ramsar Site. This designation makes the area a Wetland of International Importance. Although Coral Reefs are considered a seperate ecosytems from traditional wetlands, under the Ramsar Convention the definition of wetlands include "areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six metres", incorporating inshore reef systems such as Buccoo Reef. This is Tobago's first Ramsar site and the third for the T&T which includes the Nariva and Caroni Swamps.
